Questions about creating and adding items to a Hero

I've been messing around with the XCR files and after having to reinstall WBC 3 several times I think I've managed to add a couple of artifacts to the item.xcr (Using XCR.exe) ... However, I'm completely mystified on how to add said items to my hero in order to test them, I can't seem to make Hero Editor recognize the new items. (It has several "nil" slots that in game turn into statless swords.)
